For centuries, Habsburg duchesses have been well-sold goods on the wedding exchange of European princely courts. They were used to establish or strengthen contacts with other dynasties, to justified and legalized claims on foreign territories and countries. Nobody paid attention to the personal wishes of these young ladies, their personal happiness was not debated. Not all of them, but many of them led unhappy lives alongside their husbands, who often not only matched, but surpassed, their talent, diplomatic dexterity, and mental strength. Each of these five women was sacrificed on the altar of politics. However, each of them went its own way and was struck by its own, mostly tragic fate.

Na sobášnej burze európskych kniežacích dvorov boli habsburské vojvodkyne po stáročia dobre predávaný tovar. Využívali sa na nadviazanie alebo upevnenie kontaktov s inými dynastiami, na zdôvodnené a krvnými zväzkami legalizované nároky na cudzie územia a krajiny. Na osobné želania týchto mladých dám nik nebral ohľad, o ich osobnom šťastí sa nedebatovalo. Nie všetky, ale mnohé z nich viedli nešťastný život po boku ich manželov, ktorým sa nadaním, diplomatickou obratnosťou a duševnou silou často nielen vyrovnali, ba ich aj prevyšovali. Každá z týchto piatich žien bola obetovaná na oltár politiky. Každá z nich však išla samostatnou cestou a postihol ju vlastný, väčšinou tragický osud.
